Did you know that around 96 percent of volunteers who actively volunteer in their retirement communities report that their work enriches their sense of purpose in life? With volunteering being linked with increased morale, reducing the risks of high blood pressure and cognitive decline, as well as increasing our sense of purpose and self-worth, volunteering is an activity that should be considered by all, regardless of our age! Volunteering can be a great way for you to pass your time during retirement, and with the increased importance of remaining physically and mentally fit as we grow older, volunteering is a meaningful and gratifying way for you to do so. Hence, if you are considering volunteering in your independent living communities, here are a few leu considerations to keep in mind before doing so!
Cause
There are many different ways for you to help, but when volunteering your precious time and efforts you should probably prioritize volunteering for a cause in your community that piques your interest. There are many roles and responsibilities you can undertake, so why not take the time to pick the activity which best aligns with your interests? If you enjoy baking, why not volunteer to help in setting up, cleaning, or even conducting these baking workshops? Or perhaps if you have a unique and interesting hobby or interest you would like to share with your community, why not volunteer to help facilitate these interest groups in your community? There are many different ways for you to contribute, so think about what you feel most excited about, pick a cause that means something to you and your interest and enthusiasm would be contagious for those you are going to help!
Time
Commitment comes hand in hand with the act of volunteering, and the main hurdle when picking up this commitment of volunteerism is the amount of time we can invest in our activities. Some may feel comfortable with volunteering around 20 hours a week, some may only feel comfortable with a few hours of volunteering a month, so pick an appropriate amount of commitment that you feel comfortable with. Consider not only your daily schedule and available time, but your physical condition and your personal needs as well, do not hesitate to take a break if needed as you are retired after all, your personal relaxation and comfort should be prioritized above all else. If you are unsure about the amount of commitment and time you can invest, perhaps start with a smaller commitment and work your way up from there as you find your feet, help would always be appreciated no matter how small, so feel free to volunteer as much of your time as you feel comfortable with!
